Focus on Bias: 07.2019

The Office of Student Financial Aid distributes a monthly email focused on implicit bias with some videos to watch, articles to read, and other events around campus and the community that we encourage you to attend if your schedule allows. Videos of the Month: Article of the Month: White Privilege and Male Privilege: A Personal Account of Coming to See Correspondences Through Work in Women’s Studies by Dr. Peggy McIntosh  – https://nationalseedproject.org/images/documents/White_Privilege_and_Male_Privilege_Personal_Account-Peggy_McIntosh.pdf.  This is a longer academic paper that is definitely worth reading, but if you’re short on time or have a hard time digesting academic papers, I encourage you to at least read pages 4-7 if you want to dive into white privilege further, as in the author’s words it is “a list of special circumstances and conditions I experience that I did not earn but that I have been made to feel are mine by birth, by citizenship, and by virtue of being a conscientious law-abiding ‘normal’ person of goodwill.” Upcoming Trainings, Workshops, & Events (Newly added events are bolded) If you know of any videos, podcasts, articles, events, etc. that would be perfect to include in these updates, please send them along to Erica Tisdale at erica.tisdale@wisc.edu.
