DEI Work in Student Employment
The Student Employment team in the Office of Student Financial Aid aligns with the UW–Madison Institutional Diversity Statement and places a deep value and importance on diversity, equity, and inclusion. Their team is always looking for ways to enhance the student employment experience and recognized a chance to boost the resources and opportunities available to hiring managers and students to aid in creating a more equitable, inclusive and diverse workplace.
As a part of this work, the team recently offered the Student Employment Diversity forum that took place the first week of October. This week long forum consisted of 8 sessions with topics on inclusive leadership, discovering your identity, microaggressions and the most attended session on privilege and white identity . The forum provided student employees with an opportunity to engage in thought provoking discussion with their peers. Throughout the week over 120 students representing over 20 departments across campus participated, working towards creating an inclusive Badger community for all.
The team also aims to provide opportunities for hiring managers which includes the Student Employment Podcast series. This monthly series began in July 2020 and features a DEI podcast which is followed by an hour long virtual discussion on the topic. These discussions have provided a great space for hiring managers to bounce ideas off one another to continue to ensure diversity, equity, and inclusion are present in the student employment experience. Join the next podcast discussion on October 26th at 3pm where we will discuss Activism on College Campuses featuring the podcast The Long, Bloody Strike for Ethnic Studies and will be joined by an incredible panel of guest facilitators which includes:
- Dr. Louis Macias, Executive Director of Recruitment, Diversity and Inclusion for the UW–Madison Police Department
- Dani Barker, Associate Director for College Student Life Operations and Staff Development at UC-Santa Cruz
- Garry Morgan, Special Assistant for Diversity and Inclusion Education at Auburn University
- Nalah McWhorter, UW–Madison Student and President of the Wisconsin Black Student Union
