The Office of Admissions & Recruitment and the Office of Student Financial Aid are teaming up to offer mentorship to admitted and current students.
During the spring of 2020, OSFA initiated a partnership with Mentor Collective; a vendor focused on utilizing research and institutional goals to create a program to support and positively impact students’ connection to the campus community. The program offered the opportunity for incoming first-year students to connect with upper-class students with similar financial circumstances. With resounding success, the program has provided mentorship to 650 first year students with high financial need. Mentorship begins in the summer, pre-enrollment, and continues through the students first year.
Building upon this success, OSFA & OAR have partnered to extend mentorship opportunities to admitted students. Through this program, we aim to bolster yield of key diversity populations from the point of admission through the May 1st decision deadline. Mentors will be current students from similar backgrounds in their first and second years who can offer guidance and genuine insights.
With the upcoming launch in January 2022, OAR & OSFA are excited about this intentional enrollment effort. The collaboration will create holistic and robust mentorship opportunities that support student success and UW–Madison’s commitment to these important populations.
Mentors will assist in increasing connection, social capital, and overall sense of belonging with our admitted and current students. We already see this happening within the current first-year program. Engagement is high and feedback from students demonstrates a profound impact on the ability to find community and navigate campus, among others.
“My mentee had a lot of questions about varying aspects of college that I was able to answer. They were specific enough that she wouldn’t get an answer from some UW–Madison staff/faculty, but that a fellow UW–Madison student could definitely answer.” — 4th year student mentor
