Lumen Updates – Class Section Builder – December 2018

The use of Class Section Builder (CSB) will be suspended as of Monday, February 18. As such, work during Final Call for Fall 2019 (term 1202) will take place entirely in the Student Information System (SIS). The original decision to implement CSB was based on the tool’s strengths, including user interface, utilization reports, live-time feedback, rules enforcement, and much more. We anticipated challenges typical of major software implementations but believed these could be resolved during implementation. Nevertheless, despite heroic effort from staff in our office, across campus, and by the vendor, it has become clear that the tool’s current limitations have exceeded its strengths for UW–Madison at this time. Among other issues, full integration with our SIS has remained a persistent problem. The decision to suspend CSB was not made lightly, but we believe it to be in the best interests of our campus.
