Badger Reclaim
This May, the Basic Needs team in the Office of Student Financial Aid joined forces with Mad City Moving and University Housing Sustainability to launch Badger Reclaim. This initiative aims to provide UW–Madison students with essential housing items at no cost, promoting sustainability and community support.
Badger Reclaim builds
off the successes of the Sustainable Move Out program, which aims to divert waste from landfills and support the campus community. Did you know during move out this year, the Sustainability Move Out crew collected 184 futons, 243 microwaves, and 1,275 pounds in area rugs?! And that is just a small snapshot of what was collected during move-out across campus.
Through this collaboration, Housing Sustainability, OSFA, and Mad City Moving selectively collected unwanted, gently used items and plan to put those items back in the hands of incoming students for the Fall 2025 semester. During student move-out, the Badger Reclaim team collected storage/desk organizers, shower caddies, stools/chairs, lamps, mirrors, rugs and fans. Looking ahead, this summer, Mad City Moving and the Basic Needs Team will catalog the available items on the Basic Needs website, allowing students to claim them in advance of move-in. Then during move-in week, claimed items c
an be picked up at designated locations near residence halls, with delivery assistance provided as needed.
We are excited to continue our collaborative efforts to support students in a sustainable and community-driven manner. By providing essential housing items, we aim to alleviate financial burdens and reduce stress associated with securing basic necessities. This initiative fosters a sense of preparedness and community support, ensuring students are well-equipped to start their academic year with confidence. Stay updated on the Badger Reclaim progress by visiting the Basic Needs website for the upcoming item gallery.
