Focus on Bias: 3.12.19
The Office of Student Financial Aid distributes a weekly email focused on implicit bias with some videos to watch, articles to read, and other events around campus and the community that we encourage you to attend if your schedule allows.
Video of the Week: How the Army Gave us the SAT TEDTalk by Frank Donoghue – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sjml-sLyJNM. Many folks have heard about the cultural biases involved in standardized tests, like the SAT. This video delves into how the SAT was developed, which illuminates how its creation may have caused some of this bias. The end of the video focuses on all standardized tests and their inherent flaws. This video takes about 14 minutes to watch.
Article of the Week: As Elite Campuses Diversify, A ‘Bias Towards Privilege’ Persists – https://www.npr.org/2019/03/05/699977122/as-elite-campuses-diversify-a-bias-towards-privilege-persists. This article examines how institutional bias towards privilege causes many schools to select low-income students that are very similar to the typical students that have always been selected. If you would like to read more on this topic, we recommend The Privileged Poor: How Elite Colleges are Failing Disadvantaged Students by Anthony Abraham Jack.
