Focus on Bias: 4.2.19

The Office of Student Financial Aid distributes a weekly email focused on implicit bias with some videos to watch, articles to read, and other events around campus and the community that we encourage you to attend if your schedule allows. There are a lot of new events added this week, including a bunch for APIDA Heritage Month (which the calendar for is attached as well). Please look over the added events to see if any of them interest you!   Video of the Week: What I Hear When You Say Code Words – https://www.pbs.org/whatihear/web-series/code-words/. This video is about 6.5 minutes, but the entire What I Hear When You Say series is worth watching if you have time.   Article of the Week: Why Some Journalists Have A Hard Time Saying the Word ‘Racist’ by Gene Demby – https://www.npr.org/sections/codeswitch/2019/01/16/685980809/why-journalists-are-debating-using-racist-to-describe-rep-steve-kings-quotes.   Upcoming Opportunity: Robin DiAngelo, author of “What Does it Mean to be White” will present a FREE keynote about her new book, “White Fragility”. There is currently a waitlist for this event, so if you’re interested, we recommend you register for the waitlist (sometimes they will create an additional event when the waitlist is really robust) –  https://www.eventbrite.com/e/robin-diangelo-author-of-white-fragility-free-community-talk-tickets-59600702305?fbclid=IwAR1VHqaXyJZAwD7HnitnwSSqmfGdgQJjX7jGmFlDFwL-aBZvgL1JtBV9VhQ.   Upcoming Trainings, Workshops, & Events (Newly added events are bolded) THIS MONTH FUTURE MONTHS If you know of any videos, podcasts, articles, events, etc. that would be perfect to include in these updates, please send them along to Erica Tisdale at erica.tisdale@wisc.edu.
