Focus on Bias: 4.16.19
The Office of Student Financial Aid distributes a weekly email focused on implicit bias with some videos to watch, articles to read, and other events around campus and the community that we encourage you to attend if your schedule allows.
Podcast of the Week: What’s The Breaking Point at the Border? From the 1A NPR Podcast – https://www.npr.org/2019/04/11/712341995/whats-the-breaking-point-at-the-border. This podcast takes about 35 minutes to listen to. It features conservative writer David Frum and Pultizer Prize-winning journalist Jose Antonio Vargas. Frum recently wrote an article for The Atlantic that was met with significant criticism for looking at racist immigration policies from the past with fondness. In this podcast, Vargas explains to Frum how his article made him feel as an undocumented immigrant. The podcast can be divisive at times but I believe it’s important to remember how divisive the topic of immigration currently is in our country particularly when we think about what our DACA/Undocumented Students go thru.
Additionally, if you are interested in learning more about Jose Antonio Vargas and his experience, consider reading his book Dear America: Notes of an Undocumented Citizen.
Article of the Week: Instead of an article this week, I’d like to encourage everyone to review the DACA/Undocumented Student Support website –
