Fall 2020 COVID Classroom De-Densification

September 2nd is approaching fast. The Office of the Registrar has been working hard, with the constant cooperation of campus partners, to get ready for the fall semester through a de-densification process. De-densification is not just about physical distancing, but includes several other considerations and actions that all needed to occur in a very short amount of time to ensure all students can enroll in and attend classes, whether it be in person, remote, or a hybrid of the two. These decisions and actions will culminate in changes to the schedule of classes, which will be finalized by July 20, 2020, at which point students will be able to view the details of their fall schedule including modality (in-person or online), day, time, and location of their classes. De-densification Decisions/Actions
  • Extend standard class meeting times into evenings and Saturday mornings and early afternoons
  • Sections with 50 or more students  will be remote, with exceptions
  • Adjust classroom assignments to account for physical-distancing requirements
  • Initial call for Schools/Colleges/Departments to update the Schedule of Classes
  • Finalize updates to Schedule of Classes in SIS
  • Meet with advisors and other campus partners to provide the most up-to-date information
  • Update in Course Search & Enroll app
After the initial call for departments and schools/colleges to adjust their schedules, 39% of courses have some in-person component. The team in the RO ran reports/audits to further cleanse the data and show the distribution of classes throughout the day. Staff also adjusted the data for room assignments in General Assignment classrooms based on the new requests and the physically distanced FP&M guidelines. These accomplishments only capture a fraction of the work that was done across campus to get this process underway and work towards de-densification for fall.  While the RO recognizes that this is a continuous process and we are all working together through these changes, the office wants to also take a moment to thank all of those involved in the process. It is a difficult time with tight deadlines and additional work, but this tough time has made it evident the strength of the team we have in the Division of Enrollment Management.
