Cohesive Admit, Financial Aid, and Scholarship Communications

Over the past 6+ months, a cross-divisional team of OSFA and OAR team members has been dedicated to the DEM Cohesive Communications Project. This project seeks to understand and recommend the most effective options to align admit, financial aid, and scholarship award notifications for admitted first-year undergraduate students. On Friday, January 27th, the project team launched a pilot communications plan for select Fall 2023 admits. Initial electronic notifications were sent to the admitted, Early-Action pilot population. This is the first time students admitted to UW–Madison have received notification of their admit, financial aid, and scholarship award in a single communication. More information on the project, including details on the pilot, is below:
  • Pilot Population: See DEM Cohesive Comms Pilot
  • Admit Letter for Pilot Population: See Admissions Decision for DEM Cohesive Communication Pilot
    • Please use this example Admission Letter for internal reference only.
    • Early-Action pilot students received their Admit Letter on Friday, January 27th. The letter informs the student that they can access and view details of their Financial Aid Offer in their MyUW Student Center. Pilot students also received a separate Financial Aid Notification (FAN) & Financial Aid Letter (FAL) on Saturday, January 28th.
    • Similar efforts will be completed for regular-decision pilot students as well later this spring semester.
  • MyUW Student Center: All students, including those in the pilot, can access both their admission decisions and financial aid offers through their MyUW Student Center (no changes from previous years).
  • Print Materials: Print versions of the admission decisions and financial aid offers are not included as a part of this pilot. However, print communications are being coordinated to ensure the mailed financial aid packet closely follows the mailed admissions packet. Combining both electronic notifications and print materials are being considered as a part of this project’s final recommendation.
These pilot efforts along with existing schools/college scholarship processes, an AAU peer survey, and a student survey will inform the team’s recommendations this summer. Those recommendations will be reviewed by DEM Leadership to determine possible next steps for the 2024 Admissions cycle. The project is a priority effort in strengthening the student experience during the college-selection process and important way of supporting yield efforts for the institution’s highest priority populations.
