Weight a Minute–The Nick is Impressive!

On Tuesday, July 22, DEM team members had the opportunity to tour the Nicholas Recreation Center. Opened in September 2020, “the Nick” was the first phase of Recreation and Wellbeing’s master plan to upgrade fitness and wellness spaces across campus. With more than 30,000 square feet of fitness areas, a variety of courts and studios, and an Olympic-sized swimming pool, the Nick represents a major improvement over its predecessor, the SERF. The Nick welcomes over one million visits each year. Each week, members can participate in more than 80 fitness classes—many of which are led by students. In partnership with University Health Services (UHS), the facility also provides athletic training and physical rehabilitation services. To ensure they continue meeting members’ needs, staff regularly monitor equipment usage. They’ve observed a growing interest in strength training over cardio and have responded by adding more strength equipment. Recently, the Power House area was updated by removing artificial turf and installing new weight-lifting equipment. Rec Well also collaborates with the Office of Student Financial Aid on the No Fees Project, which allows Pell-eligible students and UW Promise Program participants to participate in intramural sports and group fitness classes without paying additional fees. Memberships for current students are included in segregated fees. Faculty and staff memberships are available for $50 per month. The tour was organized by the Well-Being Task Force, which promotes work-life harmony, well-being, and connection within the workplace. It supports DEM’s culture of belonging by promoting care & collaboration and fostering well-being. Programming is organized by quarterly themes, with the third quarter of the year focused on physical well-being.
