UW–Madison advisors and deans’ offices will soon have information directly from degree-seeking students about when they plan to graduate.
In October, what is now called the Intended Completion Term (ICT) debuted. This field, also known internally in SIS as Expected Graduation Term (EGT), gives applicable staff members a clearer picture of when undergraduate, graduate, and professional students plan to complete their degree requirements. That will help those staff members better advise and support students throughout their academic careers.
How it Works
As degree-seeking students enroll in courses for each fall and spring semester, they will be required to provide the term in which they plan to graduate as part of the Pre-Enrollment Checklist.
Students also have the option to update their ICT
via Student Center at any time before they apply to graduate.
Background
Previously, prior to a student applying for graduation, a student’s EGT was determined using an automated calculation, but this was an imperfect estimation that affected numerous downstream systems.
The RO’s Role
The RO, OACS, and DAPIR began discussing a solution in August 2023.
Once the course was charted, RO team members spent nearly a year working to outline, develop, test, and implement the ICT in SIS. That work included updating the Pre-Enrollment Checklist to include a student-entered ICT, as well as creating and updating support documentation.
A Few Important Clarifications
The new ICT process does not replace the
Apply to Graduate action. Undergraduate students will still be required to apply for graduation in Student Center, which gives their school/college official notice of their intent to graduate in the specified term. Graduate students will still apply to graduate in Student Center to note their commencement preferences.
Once a student applies to graduate, they will no longer be able to update their ICT.
The ICT also does not replace the
First Destination Survey, which collects data about undergraduate students’ future plans after graduation.
Supporting the Campus Community
A
new KB document has been created to walk students through how to update their ICT.
Ahead of its rollout, RO team members Paul Lim Oshefsky and Katie Paar provided a demonstration and answered questions from members of the advising community.
