Learning about Diversity in August
Here are few opportunities in August to learn about diversity and social justice.
- August 19 is World Humanitarian Day to commemorate humanitarian workers killed and injured around the world. USAID leads international humanitarian efforts around the world. Click here to learn more about USAID and how you can help.
- August 23 is the International Day of Remembrance for the Slave Trade and its Abolition. The United Nations pauses to remember the tragedy of the slave trade on the anniversary of an uprising of enslaved people in Santo Domingo (now Haiti and the Dominican Republic). It is estimated the 12,000,000 Africans were transported to the Americas from the 16th to the 19th centuries during what became known as the Middle Passage.
- August 26 is Women’s Equality Day. On August 26, 1920, the certification of the 19th Amendment gave women the right to vote. Did you know Wisconsin was the first state to ratify the 19th Amendment? Visit the Wisconsin Historical Museum this summer to learn more about the struggle for women’s suffrage in Wisconsin.
