Focus on Bias: 4.23.19
The Office of Student Financial Aid distributes a weekly email focused on implicit bias with some videos to watch, articles to read, and other events around campus and the community that we encourage you to attend if your schedule allows.
Podcast of the Week: The Fifteenth Amendment a Civics Podcast – https://www.civics101podcast.org/civics-101-episodes/ep103. This podcast is about 18 minutes long and goes over the fifteenth amendment as well as the Voting Rights Act of 1965. You likely learned about these in US History, but it’s a good review of what exactly these laws say and why states are bringing up the constitutionality of laws that take away voting privileges for not voting or for being a felon.
Article of the Week: How Reconstruction Still Shapes American Racism by Henry Louis Gates Jr – http://time.com/5562869/reconstruction-history/. PBS also recently aired a documentary called Reconstruction: America After the Civil War that is worth watching – https://www.pbs.org/weta/reconstruction/episodes/. The entire documentary is four hours, but is broken down into four episodes.
