Focus on Bias: 5.1.19

The Office of Student Financial Aid distributes a weekly email focused on implicit bias with some videos to watch, articles to read, and other events around campus and the community that we encourage you to attend if your schedule allows. Video of the Week: Children in Persistent Poverty – https://www.urban.org/policy-centers/cross-center-initiatives/low-income-working-families/projects/children-persistent-poverty. This video is about 6 minutes long. Article of the Week: Biased Algorithms Are Determining Whether Poor Parents Get to Keep Their Kids by Elizabeth Brico – https://talkpoverty.org/2019/02/07/biased-algorithms-determining-whether-poor-parents-get-keep-kids/. Obviously everyone wants kids to be in safe environments, but this article points out that as our society becomes more data-driven we have to pay attention to what the data we use really means. Upcoming Trainings, Workshops, & Events (Newly added events are bolded) If you know of any videos, podcasts, articles, events, etc. that would be perfect to include in these updates, please send them along to Erica Tisdale at erica.tisdale@wisc.edu.
