Learning about Diversity in September
Here are a few opportunities in September to learn about diversity and social justice.
- September 6 is Labor Day to celebrate the social and economic achievements of American workers. Many UW–Madison graduates have fought for labor rights including:
- Ramona Villareal who championed equal pay and conditions for Latinx factory and migrant workers.
- Robert “Fighting Bob” La Follette who, as Wisconsin’s Governor and Senator, fought for the rights of workers and farmers.
- September 15 to October 15 is Latinx Heritage Month. The Latinx Cultural Center facilitates an environment for Latinx-identifying students and provides academic, professional, and social opportunities that critically engage their identity and build communities of support at UW–Madison. - September 27 is World Tourism Day. As global tourism starts to recover from the impacts of the COVID-19 Pandemic, the United Nations invites us to focus on tourism for inclusive growth. Perhaps you can start with a socially distanced trip in Wisconsin?
- September is National Service Dog Month to raise awareness and show appreciation for the work that service dogs do every day. Learn more about UW–Madison’s Service Animal Policy and how it applies to students, staff, and visitors to our campus.
