Work-Study Student Employees Enrich Community Through Art and Learning at the Art + Literature Laboratory
Izi Knoernschild, OSFA’s Student Employment Administrative Assistant, shares her experience visiting a partner site this summer.
The Student Employment Team is excited to share an update about the Federal Work-Study Partner Site Visit Initiative that launched in October 2022. Our team aims to visit one Federal Work-Study Partner monthly to learn more about their mission and how work-study employees can support the Madison community. We partner with 190+ organizations, in cluding non-profits, state municipalities, and small businesses.
In July, we visited the Art + Literature Laboratory and witnessed engaging youth summer programs and the transition of art exhibits. The director expressed the significant impact work-study students have on the successful organization and facilitation of educational programs for children from kindergarten through high school. The Art + Literature Laboratory offers 18 different summer camps that involve a wide range of opportunities that target individual interests! During the visit, we witnessed an Animal Portraits class for children 7-10 years old and a Realistic Drawing class for ages 12-15. Observing the creativity and uniqueness of each child’s art was incredible. About 40% of the children who participate in the educational programs receive financial assistance, which supports the organization’s mission to bring art to the public.
We learned how the work-study student employees contribute to the mission of creating an environment where children feel safe to explore and learn about different genres of art. Overall, this visit was another excellent example of how work-study students impact the greater Madison community while gaining valuable real-world skills that align with their career aspirations! We look forward to continuing our site visits with more Federal Work-Study Partners in the upcoming months.
